Symmorphus bifasciatus

P1080464A male of the wasp Symmorphus bifasciatus photographed feeding on Hogweed nectar today at South Saxons LNR.  This wasp appears in full summer and is a predator of the larvae of the Blue Willow Beetle Phratora vulgatissima. The female wasp collects the larvae to store for its’ own young in tube nests within plants.

The South Saxons wetlands are an ideal habitat for this small wasp as the beetle feeds on the leaves of Willow and is a noted pest at times on short-rotation willow coppice woodlands.
