Thaw before straw
3 Golden Plovers with the Skylarks and buntings in the fields this morning, the ground thawing swiftly and yesterday’s snow melting fast, the tracks of many animals vanishing in the sunlight as I walk. A Stock dove displaying, Green Woodpecker calling and sheep moving into the field where mustard has been left amongst the grasses, Reed buntings scattering into Blackthorns as the grazers move from side-to-side. Nervous Song thrushes flutter towards cover. They seem to be winter visitors, heavily spotted, grey without buff tones excepting the underwing which as they fly up gives a cinnamon flash.
